Bakhmut, a city of 80,000 prior to the war, is now seemingly the sole focus of Russia’s offensive operations in Ukraine. After months of shelling and direct attacks that began in May, Bakhmut and its surrounding towns and farmland have come to resemble a war-torn World War I battlefield.
