In my experience, men simply love to explain basic economics to women.
Sometimes it's out of a genuine enthusiasm for the stock market. Sometimes it's just a classic dollop of sexism. In my 24 years and 11 months, countless men have offered me unsolicited lectures about money, little of which I have actually absorbed.
Money and the patriarchy go hand in hand, from centuries of exclusively men holding land and titles to the persistent, albeit narrowing, wage gap between men and women in the American workforce. There are countless factors in the ways men continue to hold economic power in our society, but the thorn in my side is the fact that an overwhelming subsection of them feel compelled to explain money to me, regardless of whether or not I asked.
