The youth activists who proved critics wrong in 2018

In 2018, youth activism became synonymous with the gun control movement created by Florida high school students, who survived a mass shooting that killed 17 people.  Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students made headlines for months after the February shooting in Parkland. They began by calling for gun control, and then the floodgates opened. As they organized rallies, walkouts, a voting tour, celebrity partnerships (Cc: Mark Ruffalo), and get out the vote campaigns under the banner March For Our Lives, young people across the country made their voices heard.  The young activists made it clear they care about issues like immigration rights, climate change, and LGBTQ equality, too. Young people have often been at the forefront of social movements, but in 2018 they dominated social media conversations, news coverage, forced politicians to respond, and made headlines when they voted at historic rates.
